the cougar/skull bike

Posted in Uncategorized on November 14, 2009 by Aaron

This was the first car that Dave Stew owned. It cost a couple throusand bucks, had like a 400 horsepower engine, an eight track player, and it was 18 feet long. It had a short lifetime, but an awesome one that probably peaked on this roadtrip. Every may long weekend we used to go to a camp in Princeton called Rockridge Canyon. It’s a full on camp now, but back then it was just a cow pasture with 500 or so people camping on it. I think this was 2002, and we had all grown moustaches for months prior to that weekend. We stopped in Keremeos on the way out for our classiest moment, in which the phrase “hey ladies, ever kissed a man with a moustache?” saw its birth and demise within that group of people (I still, to this day, have not seen a more disgusted look on anyone). I think Dave found that bike at Rockridge, and he definitely found the skull and bones there. I have no idea what happenned to it, although I’d bet that this was it’s last bit of usefullness.

lazerdick part 2

I met andrew on a trip to Nelson when I was 16. That would have made him 12 or 13. He was still pretty good, I remember he was better than me. I think I learned 5050 stalls that trip (I rode trails). I have a lot of photos of Andrew from over the years. He’s one of those riders that can do basic tricks really well, and it translates nicely between park and street. Andrew has a bunch of tech tricks too, but his tabletops are the most photogenic.

This was from the no bikes/dirty hippie jam of 2003. That jam was amazing! We built sketchy ramps the day before the contest and put them in the skatepark – by the end of the jam they had all fallen apart. We showed the Salvation video afterwards and Autem played a few songs, for which we paid them in soda.

andrewunlookback

This has to have been taken in the last few months because Jared Chilko just invented this trick.

andrewunderice

This is an actual trick, it was briefly popular in the early ’00s. This was also early enough that the fence was still up at city park – which can be seen in Dom Mach’s macneil part… the greatest video part of all time.

andrewpegwall

This was also a trick, invented by Taj I think. If you’re awesome you probably spotted K-Dawg on the left there. At this jam he bunnyhopped over a bike, and wallrode over his friend. If your bike ever got stolen in Penticton, he could always get it back for you. That guy was awesome.

andrewlookback

Andrew soon after learning lookbacks. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

andrewcoldtable

This was sometime around when Coldstream opened, maybe in the first year or two. Sprockets were still big.

andrewbenleetable

Andrew was the first person I saw really ride this hip. It kind of just chilled for a few years and nobody had it figured out. Now it gets sessioned pretty nicely.

I told you I have old photos. Clearly, Andrew is like ten years old in this. I scanned a bunch of old photos of Andrew today that I’ll probably post tomorrow, so stay tuned for more from the guy with the weirdest nickname in bmx.

I shot this photo in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At that point I was not traveling with my bike,  but every time I saw a spot I would still get excited. Sometimes I would take a photo just to remember it. Malaysia had some cool spots, but overall it didn’t compare to western city. There were lots of cool things to see, but the infrastructure was a bit different and more basic. I wish I  had brought my bike, it would have been an interesting thing to do there, even if in convenient. Traveling is mostly exciting and fun, but long term it can get boring; it’s nice to have something to do in that case.

old photos

I found a big stack of old photos while moving, so I’ll be posting a bunch of them up over the coming months. This is a photo from Canberra, Australia – a two day overnight trip that I mapped out below.  This spot has been in a few videos, and it’s awesome. I rode something like 30 km to ride it. The rest of my photos are mostly from ‘01-’05, there’s a lot of cool stuff from that time period of BMX in Kelowna, and a bunch of stuff from around the world. I look forward to sharing it.

I’m underwhelmed.

Van Homan’s part is really good though, and it makes me feel like I at least got my money’s worth. It’s never fair to compare parts to his Criminal Mischief part because that was so far above what anyone had done up to that point, but it’s up there. You can tell he put some serious sweat and blood into this part.

I have a professional exam on the 6th of November, so I won’t be posting until after that, but expect an update soon after, I still have lots of extra video to post.

This trailer’s been up for a while, but I want to point out how excited I am to see the video. The last Presence video was awesome, and this one should be even better.
